Polish authorities have arrested a Russian citizen accused of plotting to assassinate a Ukrainian-American in Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday.
Tusk said the suspect was arrested on August 7 after Poland’s Internal Security Agency and police allegedly prevented the planned attack at the last moment. He described the incident as a “very dangerous signal” and said the intended target was considered an opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government.
According to Tusk, the case is believed to be the first known attempt by someone acting on behalf of Russia to attack a US citizen on the territory of another NATO member.
Polish Security Services Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said the arrest was carried out in cooperation with US authorities.
The alleged plot comes amid growing concerns across Europe over Russian-linked espionage, sabotage and attacks against Moscow’s critics. Several European countries have previously reported and disrupted alleged plots targeting Russian dissidents and people connected to the war in Ukraine.
Poland and the Baltic states have also increased security around critical infrastructure amid heightened concerns over potential threats from Russia.
Russia has not publicly acknowledged involvement in the alleged assassination plot.
