The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a renovated primary school in Okpoma, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, as part of efforts to strengthen civil-military relations and support community development.
The project was carried out under the Chief of Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects Scheme and was undertaken by Rear Admiral E.A. Zipele, an indigene of the community.
The intervention included the renovation of three blocks containing eight classrooms, staff and administrative offices, toilet facilities and other school infrastructure. The Navy also constructed a drainage system and installed a solar-powered borehole to provide clean water.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral S.D. Ibrahim, who represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibe Abbas, said national security and prosperity could be strengthened when communities were empowered to pursue meaningful development.
He said the project was designed to address important community needs while improving the relationship between the military and local residents.
According to Ibrahim, improving the quality of public primary education remains an important driver of socio-economic development. He said the renovated facilities would provide pupils with a better environment for learning.
He added that the solar-powered borehole would provide potable water for pupils, teachers and residents, while the drainage system would help reduce flooding within the school premises.
The Navy urged members of the community to protect and maintain the facilities so they could serve future generations.
The naval representative also commended Rear Admiral Zipele for identifying the educational needs of his community and using funds from the intervention scheme to address them.
He said the project demonstrated that leadership was most meaningful when it positively improved people's lives.
The initiative, launched in 2024, is aimed at strengthening the Nigerian Navy's civil-military cooperation and supporting the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Navy said its responsibility goes beyond protecting lives and property to include supporting projects that improve the welfare of Nigerians.
The project is expected to create a more conducive learning environment, improve access to clean water and reduce flooding around the school.
The Navy also called on residents of Bayelsa State to continue cooperating with the Navy, other branches of the Armed Forces and security agencies.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior naval officers, the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral O.B.F. Oladipo, traditional rulers, community leaders and other dignitaries.
