A UK court has sentenced a 26-year-old Nigerian man, Osarenkhoe Atutie, to seven-and-a-half years in prison for attempting to murder his estranged wife in a brutal attack that took place in front of their young daughter in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Atutie was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, after pleading guilty to the offence.
The attack occurred on November 11, 2025, on Duke Street in Leith. According to court proceedings, Atutie embraced his daughter before repeatedly stabbing his former wife, Victory Atutie, 30.
The High Court heard that the victim suffered 12 injuries, including facial scars and a collapsed lung. The presiding judge, Lord Cubie, described the incident as a "sustained attack" on a "defenceless victim."
The court also imposed a lifetime order prohibiting Atutie from contacting his former wife.
The couple married in Nigeria about four years before the attack and later relocated to London, where their daughter was born. Following the breakdown of their marriage, Victory moved to Edinburgh with their child. Prosecutors said Atutie tracked them down before carrying out the attack.
Lord Cubie said the defendant's actions demonstrated planning and intent, adding that the victim survived only because of the swift intervention of members of the public and good fortune.
"She could have died. It was plainly through a combination of luck and the intervention of passers-by that she survived," the judge said.
