A Nigerian national, Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, has been arrested in Vietnam after authorities allegedly discovered about 2kg of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two suspected bricks of heroin concealed in a shipment from Laos.
According to VietnamPlus, the drugs were discovered on August 5 at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in Quang Tri Province after customs officers detected suspicious images during a scan of a consignment entering Vietnam from Laos.
A subsequent physical inspection reportedly found the suspected drugs hidden inside electric water heaters and electronic components, which were allegedly being used to disguise the shipment.
The discovery prompted Vietnamese authorities to launch an investigation into suspected international drug trafficking. Customs officials worked with police, anti-smuggling investigators and border guards to trace the intended recipient of the consignment.
After several days of investigation, authorities reportedly arrested Odionye, a Nigerian born in 1983, on August 9 in Ho Chi Minh City while he was receiving the package.
The suspect allegedly admitted that the package contained drugs and told investigators that he had been hired to receive the consignment in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it to Hanoi.
Vietnamese authorities have since expanded the investigation as they seek to identify other individuals allegedly connected to the suspected drug trafficking operation.
The case remains under investigation.
