Explosion Reported at School in Kabul

Several students were reportedly injured after an explosion occurred at a school in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of Kabul, Afghanistan, on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The blast reportedly occurred at about 4:30 p.m. local time at the Shama-e Hidayat school in the Mahdia neighbourhood. Witnesses said several injured students were taken to Alami Hospital for treatment.

The exact number of casualties and the cause of the explosion remain unclear. It has also not been confirmed whether anyone was killed.

Reports from local media, including Kabul Now and TOLOnews, said the explosion may have been caused by a hand grenade. However, Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify the reports.

Footage from the scene showed crowds gathering around ambulances near the reported site of the explosion.

Dasht-e-Barchi is predominantly inhabited by members of Afghanistan’s Hazara minority, a community that has previously been targeted in attacks by Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K).

Afghan government officials had not commented on the incident at the time of publication.
