A massive flood struck Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district on Wednesday, damaging roads and electricity infrastructure as authorities began assessing the extent of the destruction.
Videos shared by Nepal Police and other sources showed huge amounts of muddy water rushing through mountain valleys in the Himalayan district, which borders China.
Nepal Police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle said authorities were still assessing the damage but warned that several settlements may have been affected. Residents living close to rivers were advised to move to safer areas, while emergency resources were deployed.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah held an emergency meeting with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority to coordinate the response. He said efforts had begun in cooperation with medical teams, scouts and the Red Cross.
The Nepal Army also deployed helicopters and disaster-response personnel to the affected areas to assist with rescue and relief operations.
The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that around 430 megawatts of electricity-generation capacity, including hydropower and solar facilities, had been damaged. The disaster also affected power transmission and distribution systems, causing electricity supply disruptions.
Several major highways were also closed because of the flooding.
Nepal and other parts of South Asia regularly experience severe floods and landslides during the June–September monsoon season. Scientists say climate change is contributing to more frequent and intense extreme weather events in the region.
