Nearly 270,000 Israelis Leave Country as Political and Security Concerns Fuel ‘Tsunami’ of Emigration

Nearly 270,000 Israelis have left the country over the past three years, raising concerns about the country’s demographic, economic and political future, according to recent studies cited by Al Jazeera.

More than 86,500 Israelis left in 2023, followed by about 91,500 in 2024 and a similar number in 2025. Researchers say many of those leaving are highly educated, wealthy and professionally skilled, with political uncertainty and security concerns among the major reasons.

The trend has intensified ahead of Israel’s upcoming elections, with critics blaming the government’s political direction, judicial reforms and prolonged regional conflicts for encouraging emigration.

Israeli demographer Sergio Della Pergola said the sustained level of outward migration was unusual and particularly concerning because many emigrants reportedly feel uncertain about their security and the country’s political future.

Researchers also warned that the departure of young professionals could hurt Israel’s economy, particularly its technology, research and development sectors. Immigration expert Lilach Lev Ari said highly educated young families were increasingly among those moving abroad.

Opposition lawmaker Gilad Kariv has described the trend as a “tsunami” of emigration and accused the government of failing to adequately address it.

Experts, however, differ on the scale of the long-term impact. Some argue that Israel still retains a strong pool of skilled workers, while others warn that the continued loss of professionals and essential workers could weaken the country’s economy and public services.

The growing emigration trend has therefore emerged as a major challenge for Israel, raising questions about whether the country can retain the young, skilled population considered crucial to its future growth and stability.
