A weekly Muslim call to prayer broadcast from the Regina City Jamia Masjid in Saskatchewan, Canada, has sparked a public debate after Christian prayers were held on the sidewalk outside the mosque.
The incident occurred for the second consecutive Friday after the mosque began broadcasting its call to prayer, known as the Adhan, outside the building.
During Friday’s gathering, a person on the sidewalk responded by loudly reciting Christian prayers, with the two groups at times appearing to drown each other out.
The public display has divided members of the community. Some residents support the mosque’s right to publicly express its faith, while others believe the call to prayer should remain inside the mosque.
A petition has reportedly been launched calling on Regina city council to address the issue.
Petition organizer Amanda Svedahl said she believes Christians generally do not impose their religion on others and argued that Muslims should not be required to broadcast their call to prayer in public.
However, the mosque said it has no objection to the Christian response.
“We don’t see any problem,” Regina City Jamia Masjid director M. Anisur Rahaman said, adding that people have the right to believe what they want and share their faith with others.
The mosque said it has no regrets about introducing the weekly outdoor call to prayer and considers the resulting discussion about religious freedom and public expression to be a positive development.
The debate continues to raise questions about religious freedom, public space and how different faith communities can peacefully express their beliefs in a diverse society.
