The Lagos State Government says it has paid N168.2 billion to more than 48,000 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme since 2007.
The government said N92 billion was paid in accrued pension rights to more than 25,000 retirees between May 2019 and August 2026. It explained that accrued rights cover both gratuity and pension payments owed to retiring workers.
It also highlighted a N5 billion payment to 1,963 retirees in July 2024, which it said cleared outstanding pension backlogs under the scheme.
The government further said pension contribution rates were increased in 2020 to 10% for employers and 8% for employees to strengthen the pension system.
For 2026, the Lagos State Pension Commission has so far paid over N4 billion to 1,862 retirees, with another N1 billion expected to be paid to 700 retirees within a week.
The government said it had also introduced welfare measures for retirees, including assistance for sick pensioners and periodic welfare programmes to help them cope with rising living costs.
Overall, the Lagos State Government said the payments and other interventions demonstrate its commitment to improving the welfare of retired public servants.
