Four-year-old Precious Wambui is finally returning to Kenya to reunite with her mother, Penina Wanjiru Kihiu, after the two were separated during Wanjiru’s deportation from Saudi Arabia in 2024.
Wanjiru travelled to Saudi Arabia in 2019 to look for work and gave birth to Precious in 2022. She had kept her pregnancy secret because she feared being deported. She also avoided seeking medical care during childbirth because she was afraid authorities would discover her situation.
The mother and daughter lived together until Precious was about three years old, when Wanjiru enrolled her in daycare. Their lives changed after Saudi police raided Wanjiru’s home. She was taken to the Kenyan embassy and later ordered to leave the country, but she was unable to take Precious with her.
After returning to Kenya, Wanjiru spent two years appealing for her daughter’s return. She was told that a DNA test was needed before Precious could travel to Kenya. She completed the test in July 2026 and submitted the results.
The Kenyan Embassy in Riyadh announced on August 23 that Ambassador Joseph Masila had helped trace and secure the release of Precious. The child’s return was made possible through cooperation between Kenyan diaspora officials, Saudi authorities and Kenya’s State Department for Diaspora Affairs.
Wanjiru had also feared that her daughter could eventually be placed in an orphanage because the repatriation process was taking so long.
After years of uncertainty and separation, Precious is now being brought home to reunite with her mother and extended family.
