ASUU Gives Gombe Government 14-Day Strike Ultimatum

The Gombe State University (GSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Gombe State Government to address its outstanding demands or face a total and indefinite strike.

The union disclosed this in a statement jointly signed by its branch chairman, Dr Mustapha S. Shehu, and secretary, Dr Aliyu Usman Shelleng.

According to the statement, the decision followed a report from the National Executive Council (NEC) visitation to the university branch. The NEC reportedly directed the branch to commence an indefinite strike if the government failed to resolve the union’s grievances within the 14-day period.

The proposed strike is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

Among the union’s demands are the payment of the 2021–2024 backlog of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards, implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage, and payment of ₦30,000 minimum wage arrears.

ASUU is also demanding the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, improved postgraduate supervision allowances, teaching practice, industrial training and field trip allowances, as well as enhanced responsibility allowances.

The union said it had appealed to the state government three months ago to settle the outstanding entitlements and avert industrial action.

Shehu said all efforts by the union’s leadership to engage the government over the unpaid entitlements had so far failed.

If the demands are not addressed before the expiration of the ultimatum, ASUU warned that the university could be shut down indefinitely from August 25.
