A violent clash has reportedly broken out between two rival extremist factions in Borno State, with fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launching an ambush against members of Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), a Boko Haram faction.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the attack occurred near Bula Murge in Bama Local Government Area. ISWAP fighters allegedly carried out a surprise assault in the Gargash area, leaving several senior JAS commanders feared dead.
Those reportedly killed include Abu Ubaida, Modu Kori, Alhaji Modu, Mure, Zarkawi, Sheriff, and Modu Maye, all described as key JAS commanders operating in the area.
The report also indicated that surviving JAS members began evacuating their women and children to Bula Daloye after their camps were overrun. Intercepted communications reportedly revealed the group was in disarray following the attack.
During the assault, the settlements of Bula Murge and Nguro Bafuye were reportedly set ablaze, destroying camps, shelters, and logistics facilities previously used by the JAS faction.
Security sources believe the confrontation has significantly weakened the JAS faction, creating an opportunity for Nigerian troops to intensify ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the region.
Military authorities have reportedly directed troops operating around Miyanti, Bama, Kumshe, and nearby communities to maintain offensive operations aimed at preventing either ISWAP or JAS fighters from regrouping or establishing new bases.
The latest development highlights the continuing rivalry between the two insurgent factions as security forces sustain efforts to dismantle extremist operations across the southern fringes of the Sambisa Forest.
