ICPC Clears Gbajabiamila, Says Fake Appointment Letter Was Forged

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has cleared the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, of any involvement in the controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).

Presenting an interim investigation report in Abuja, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN) said the appointment letter presented by Adeniyi Adeyemi Mathew, who claimed to be the Director-General of the council, was forged.

According to the commission, investigations revealed that the so-called Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council was never established by any law, executive order, or other legal instrument of the Federal Government. The ICPC also found that Adeyemi was never appointed by the government or any authorized institution.

Aliyu stated that all documents used to support the existence of the fake agency, including the appointment letter, were fraudulent. He added that the suspect allegedly impersonated government officials and illegally used the identity and operational structure of the former Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC).

The ICPC further disclosed that although investigators identified weaknesses in verification procedures and inter-agency oversight that allowed the alleged fraud to occur, no evidence was found of wrongdoing within the State House or the Central Bank of Nigeria. Both institutions were said to have maintained proper internal processes.

The commission also confirmed that no public funds were approved or disbursed to either the fake PFIPC or the former PEAC.

The findings effectively clear Femi Gbajabiamila of any wrongdoing in the matter, while the ICPC said investigations into other aspects of the case are still ongoing.
