Israeli prosecutors have charged an Israeli settler with the killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank, marking the first indictment of an Israeli accused of killing a Palestinian in the territory since the October 7, 2023, conflict.
According to prosecutors, Yinon Levi has been charged with reckless manslaughter, as well as armed trespassing and malicious property damage, over the fatal shooting of Hathaleen in July 2025. Under Israeli law, reckless manslaughter carries a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.
Hathaleen was a well-known Palestinian community leader who campaigned against settler violence in the southern West Bank. He also featured in the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, which highlighted the struggle of Palestinian communities to remain on their land.
The victim's family welcomed the indictment, describing it as a significant step toward accountability. Their lawyer expressed hope that the case would lead to stronger enforcement of the law against extremist settler violence in the West Bank.
Levi has denied the allegations and says he will challenge the charges in court. In a statement, he argued that his actions were in self-defense, while his lawyer described the prosecution's decision as a mistake and said the defense would present its case during the trial.
The case is expected to draw significant attention as violence between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank continues to fuel tensions across the region.
