Israeli forces have stepped up military operations across the Gaza Strip despite a United States-backed peace initiative announced by President Donald Trump, raising concerns over the future of the proposed ceasefire and worsening the humanitarian crisis.
According to reports, at least 26 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed during Israeli attacks over the weekend, as heavy bombardments continued across the enclave.
The peace roadmap, which was introduced last week, outlines a second phase of a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the conflict. Hamas has reportedly accepted the plan, including a phased disarmament process under international supervision. However, the Israeli government says it has serious security concerns and insists on the complete disarmament of Hamas before withdrawing its forces.
Israeli officials have also demanded that no Palestinian body be involved in overseeing the disarmament process, while maintaining that military operations will continue until Hamas is fully demilitarised.
Political analysts believe Israel's position is influenced by domestic political considerations ahead of the country's general elections scheduled for October. They argue that delays in implementing the agreement could be intended to avoid political fallout while maintaining military pressure on Gaza.
The proposed roadmap also calls for the establishment of an independent technocratic Palestinian administration to oversee civilian affairs and reconstruction. However, experts warn that continued Israeli military operations and refusal to withdraw from key areas could make such an administration difficult to implement.
Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate as ongoing fighting damages infrastructure, disrupts medical services, and limits access to essential aid.
Diplomatic tensions have also increased after Israel reportedly objected to the participation of Qatar and Türkiye in monitoring the implementation of the agreement.
International mediators have urged all parties to uphold their commitments and work towards a lasting ceasefire, warning that continued violence could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring stability to the region.
