India’s security agencies have arrested more than 200 suspected militant operatives linked to Pakistan, authorities said, claiming the arrests helped prevent planned attacks ahead of the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said the operation was conducted across 14 states on August 12, three days before India marked the 80th anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule.
According to Shah, the operation targeted a militant network that Indian authorities said was backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He said the arrests disrupted plans for what he described as “subversive attacks.”
Indian authorities also reported recovering pistols, live ammunition, grenades bearing Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings and crude explosive devices during the operation.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Islamabad has previously denied allegations that it supports militant groups accused of carrying out attacks in India.
India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed neighbours, have long accused each other of supporting or enabling militant activity on their territories.
Relations between the two countries remain tense following a four-day military conflict last year, which began after India blamed Pakistani attackers for the killing of 26 people at a tourist site in Indian-administered Kashmir.
