Armed police officers and soldiers on Wednesday prevented retired military personnel from gathering in front of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja to protest the non-implementation of consequential adjustments to their pensions.
The ex-servicemen had planned to demonstrate over pension increases linked to salary adjustments approved for serving military personnel. However, security personnel moved to stop them from assembling at the ministry.
The attempt to prevent the protest reportedly led to a confrontation between serving soldiers and the retired personnel. Security forces were subsequently reinforced, effectively blocking the retirees from reaching the ministry’s entrance.
The retirees are demanding that the government implement the corresponding pension adjustments arising from recent increases in military personnel’s salaries.
