FRSC Arrests Truck Driver After Discovering 15 Passengers Hidden Under Cover.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured a one-month jail sentence for a truck driver after its marshals discovered 15 passengers concealed beneath a covering on his vehicle during an enforcement operation.

The incident involved a Mitsubishi truck marked GDD 815 ZP. FRSC officials became suspicious after noticing that the truck’s cargo area was tightly covered and decided to conduct a thorough inspection.

During the inspection, officers lifted the large green covering and discovered 15 people and eight motorcycles hidden among sacks and other goods.

The FRSC Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, said the driver, Umar Muhammadu, was arrested during the operation. He reportedly attempted to offer an FRSC marshal ₦500 as an inducement and was also unable to produce a valid driver’s licence.

The driver, the vehicle and the occupants were subsequently handed over to the Divisional Police Officer in Mararaba for further investigation and prosecution.

In a separate incident in Abia State, a Mobile Court sentenced another commercial driver, Azubuike Dominic, to one month in prison for driving without a valid licence. He had also reportedly escaped while being escorted to court but was later rearrested following a coordinated pursuit by FRSC personnel and the military.

The FRSC said the cases demonstrate its commitment to tackling dangerous road practices through intelligence-led enforcement and collaboration with other security agencies.

The Corps warned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against hiding passengers or motorcycles in vehicles, overloading, driving without valid licences and offering bribes to road safety officials.

The agency said it would continue using intelligence, professional enforcement and Mobile Courts to improve road safety across Nigeria.
