The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has identified and detained police officers accused of allegedly extorting ₦40,000 from a resident along the Wuye–Utako Road, near Salem Church, Abuja.
The command confirmed that the officers shown in a video circulating on social media had been identified and taken into custody.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
According to the police, the incident allegedly occurred on August 20, 2026. The complainant claimed that a police officer collected ₦40,000 from him despite confirming that his vehicle documents were complete.
The video, which began circulating widely on August 24, showed the complainant presenting a receipt and discussing the incident after returning to the police checkpoint.
The police command has invited the complainant to its headquarters to provide an official statement to assist with the investigation and possible disciplinary action.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, said the command would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct or unprofessional behaviour by its personnel.
He warned that any officer found guilty after investigation would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action in accordance with the law.
The command also urged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct and provide information that could assist investigations.
The incident comes amid repeated complaints of alleged police extortion at checkpoints in Abuja. In June 2026, CP Sanusi warned officers against extorting money from commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators.
In July, the command detained four officers and ordered them to face an orderly room trial after they were accused of abandoning their posts, operating an unauthorised checkpoint and allegedly extorting about ₦52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Aliyu, SAN.
