Concerned elders and families in Borno State have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to intensify efforts to rescue dozens of schoolchildren and other residents who have remained in captivity for 100 days.
The appeal was made by the Hawul Askira-Uba Elders Forum during a press conference in Abuja on Friday. The group described the prolonged captivity as a period of “horror, pain and suffering” for the victims’ families.
Among those whose release is being demanded are 42 pupils and students of Mussa Primary and Junior Day Secondary School, who were reportedly abducted on May 15, 2026, in Askira-Uba Local Government Area.
The elders also called for the rescue of 36 students of Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, who were reportedly abducted on June 29 while sitting for their NECO examinations.
In addition, they demanded the rescue of 38 people reportedly abducted along the Buratai Road to Maiduguri, as well as other victims taken along the Chibok route and other vulnerable roads in the state.
The group stressed that the victims should not be treated as mere statistics, noting that every abducted person represents a family living with fear and uncertainty.
Addressing President Tinubu, the elders urged him to deploy all available national security resources to secure the victims’ release.
> “Mr President, please bring our children home,” the group pleaded.
They also urged Governor Zulum to use his office to push for the immediate rescue of the abducted persons.
The forum pointed to the recent rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State as evidence that coordinated security operations can successfully free kidnapped victims. While commending the federal government and security agencies for the Oyo rescue operation, the group questioned why the same level of urgency had not been applied to the victims in Borno.
The elders said they were not seeking preferential treatment, but equal protection and a similar level of determination from the authorities. They also called for regular and credible updates to the affected families regarding ongoing rescue efforts.
