The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the shooting of two traders by policemen attached to the Bridge Head Police Division in Onitsha.
The incident occurred on Wednesday during an attempted arrest. The two traders reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and hands and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
CP Ama visited the victims and assured them of the command’s support, adding that he would personally ensure that their medical expenses were covered.
The police commissioner said the investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, particularly the events that led officers to discharge their firearms. He added that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings.
The incident reportedly triggered tension around the Head Bridge area after aggrieved traders and passersby barricaded the scene, causing traffic congestion.
Addressing the crowd, CP Ama appealed for calm and urged residents to avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
Following the commissioner’s intervention, vehicular and human movement in the area gradually returned to normal.
