Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has blamed the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the August 15 Osun State governorship election on the activities of what he described as “Abuja politicians.”
Sule made the remarks on Tuesday during a press briefing in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke defeated the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and 14 other candidates in the keenly contested election.
Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji secured 444,815 votes. The ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke won 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won the remaining 11.
Sule said the APC could have won the election if certain politicians from Abuja had not intervened in the state shortly before the poll.
He also stressed the importance of incumbency, saying the election demonstrated the political advantage enjoyed by a sitting governor.
The Nasarawa governor maintained that the APC’s defeat should not be viewed as a rejection of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which he said had performed well.
He further argued that those celebrating Adeleke’s victory might not fully understand the factors behind the result, insisting that the influence of the incumbent governor played a major role in the outcome.
