The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) chapter, has declared a total and indefinite strike over the alleged failure to implement the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.
The chairman of the union, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Akure, Ondo State.
The latest industrial action comes barely one week after the union suspended an earlier strike over unpaid salary arrears following the payment of outstanding salaries.
Oshodi said the union had repeatedly engaged the Ondo State Government through letters and requests for meetings but received no concrete action on the implementation of the agreement.
He said lecturers would not return to the classrooms based solely on promises, stressing that the union now wants tangible action from the government.
According to him, the strike will continue until the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement is implemented and salary arrears owed from January are fully paid.
“We are not ready to listen to commitments again. What we want now is action,” he said.
The ASUU chairman also questioned why Ondo State had yet to implement the agreement when other state governments had already begun doing so.
He, however, said the union remained open to dialogue with the state government, but insisted that implementation and payment of the outstanding arrears must begin before lecturers can resume work.
The 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement reportedly includes an upgraded salary structure, a 40 per cent salary review for academic staff and the payment of accumulated salary arrears.
The development follows a similar decision by the ASUU chapter of Imo State University, Owerri, which recently declared an indefinite strike over alleged failure by the state government and university management to implement agreements on staff welfare and conditions of service.
