17 Bandits, 10 Police Officers Killed in Zamfara-Kebbi Clash

Seventeen suspected bandits and 10 police officers were killed on Monday during a fierce encounter between security personnel and a large group of armed men moving from Zamfara State towards Kebbi State.

The clash occurred around the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Two civilians were also reportedly killed during the confrontation.

According to residents, the armed group consisted of about 240 bandits travelling on more than 200 motorcycles. They reportedly moved from the Sangeko Gap area of Dansadau District in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

A resident, Musa Sani, said the bandits travelled in three formations and spent the night in a forest between Kakihum and Makuku before continuing towards Maburya on Monday morning.

The group reportedly encountered a Mobile Police checkpoint while attempting to enter the community, leading to a confrontation in which several security personnel were overpowered.

The spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, DSP Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident, saying 17 suspected bandits had so far been neutralised.

He said security personnel intercepted the heavily armed group along the Rafin Makuku axis and engaged them in a gun battle.

Usman added that four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed during the operation, while the final casualty figures remained subject to further verification.

“Sadly, we lost 10 brave police personnel in the engagement, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. Two civilians also lost their lives,” he said.

The police spokesperson commended the slain officers for their courage and professionalism, adding that the command would continue operations to track fleeing members of the group.

He said the immediate priorities were to support the families of the deceased officers, provide medical care for the injured and intensify efforts to apprehend the remaining attackers.
