At least 12 people have been killed and 10 others seriously injured after a bus carrying Polish tourists crashed in eastern Hungary on Sunday.
The bus, travelling from Serbia to Poland with 57 passengers and two drivers, veered off the M3 motorway near Mezokeresztes, about 140 kilometres east of Budapest, before overturning in a ditch.
Eleven people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim died later in hospital. Hungary’s ambulance service said 37 other passengers suffered minor injuries.
Rescue workers were forced to pull some passengers through the bus windows after they became trapped inside.
Hungarian police said preliminary information suggested the driver may have fallen asleep. The driver was taken into custody.
Polish officials said their consular services were working with Hungarian authorities to provide assistance and verified information to the victims and their families.
The crash is reportedly Hungary’s deadliest road accident since 2003, when a train collided with a German tourist bus in Siofok, killing 33 people.
