Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, for allegedly dealing in illicit drugs in Ilisan, Ogun State.
According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Ogunmabo was arrested on August 15, 2026, with 90 grammes of skunk, a strain of cannabis, packaged in small sachets for sale to residents.
The centenarian reportedly told investigators that she turned to drug dealing after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire. She also claimed that one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied her with the drugs every four days, which she then sold in small quantities.
Due to her advanced age, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), directed that she be granted bail and placed under counselling. Her daughter was also arrested.
In a separate operation, NDLEA officers in Akwa Ibom intercepted a wooden boat allegedly transporting illicit drugs to fishing settlements in Cameroon. Three suspects were arrested, and 42.622kg of narcotics, including skunk and cocaine, was recovered.
The agency also announced its first seizure of illicit drugs shipped from Thailand through Nigeria's maritime corridor. Two containers intercepted at the Apapa and Lekki ports contained cannabis indica, popularly known as Thai Loud, with a combined street value estimated at more than N4.4 billion.
At Apapa Port, authorities recovered 1,090.5kg of the drug concealed in a container declared to contain various legitimate goods. At Lekki Deep Sea Port, another 400kg was discovered hidden among pallets of A4 paper.
In the Federal Capital Territory, NDLEA operatives intercepted three waybill packages containing 24,410 tramadol capsules inside a Hummer bus travelling from Enugu to Zuba. The alleged owner of the consignment, 28-year-old Sunday Eze, was later arrested in Kontagora, Niger State.
The agency also destroyed a cannabis farm covering four hectares in Ijare forest, Ondo State, where about 10,000kg of skunk was cultivated.
Other arrests and seizures were recorded in Kano, Lagos, Abia and other states as part of the agency's nationwide crackdown on illicit drug trafficking.
Marwa commended NDLEA officers involved in the operations and urged them to maintain the agency's balanced approach to combating drug abuse and trafficking across Nigeria.
