The United States is seeking a public commitment from Iran to ensure the safe and unrestricted passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz as diplomatic efforts continue to ease tensions in the Gulf.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi arrived in Oman on Saturday for talks focused on maritime security and regional stability. Oman is acting as a mediator between Tehran and Washington following months of conflict that has disrupted global energy markets.
US President Donald Trump said Washington and Tehran had agreed to continue discussions despite recent military confrontations. Although the ceasefire has effectively collapsed, officials from both countries are reportedly working through mediators to prevent further escalation.
According to reports, senior US officials are demanding that Iran publicly guarantee an end to attacks on commercial vessels and allow free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions or tolls.
The waterway is one of the world's most strategic shipping routes, carrying a significant share of global oil exports. Attacks on commercial tankers earlier this week heightened tensions, triggered military exchanges between the United States and Iran, and pushed global oil prices sharply higher.
Iran has denied direct responsibility for the attacks but insists any future agreement must involve mutual compliance by both sides. Tehran also warned it would respond if Washington failed to honour its commitments.
Meanwhile, Qatar and Oman are continuing diplomatic efforts to broker a broader agreement aimed at preventing further violence and restoring stability in the Gulf.
The renewed tensions have raised concerns over global energy supplies, with higher oil prices expected to increase fuel costs for consumers worldwide.
