The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote next week on legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent across the United States, marking another attempt to end the twice-yearly clock changes.
The proposed Sunshine Protection Act would allow states to opt out if they choose. The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee in May with a 48-1 vote.
Supporters argue that ending the seasonal time changes would reduce sleep disruptions, workplace injuries and road accidents, while providing longer evening daylight that could benefit businesses, tourism and outdoor activities.
President Donald Trump has also backed the proposal, calling for an end to the twice-a-year clock changes and describing the current system as unnecessary and costly.
However, the bill still faces opposition. Critics, including Senator Tom Cotton, warn that permanent daylight saving time would lead to very late winter sunrises, forcing many children to travel to school in darkness.
If approved by the House, the legislation will return to the Senate for further consideration before it can become law.
