The University of Calabar (UNICAL) says it has refunded tuition fees to 1,089 students under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme, with 2,090 additional refund applications currently awaiting payment through its newly introduced digital portal.
Speaking in Calabar on Friday, the university's NELFUND Desk Officer, Dr. Elizabeth Effiwatt, said the institution has completed nine batches of refunds and rejected claims that UNICAL had failed to reimburse eligible students.
According to her, the university remains committed to transparency and accountability in handling NELFUND disbursements.
Effiwatt explained that the refunds were processed in phases, covering 1,089 students across nine batches, and emphasized that the exercise is still ongoing.
She also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr for introducing the student loan initiative, describing it as a major boost for higher education in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, UNICAL's Director of ICT, Dr. Eyo Essien, said the university has launched a fully digital refund platform that allows students to apply for tuition refunds and make school fee payments online without visiting any office.
Essien disclosed that 2,090 students submitted refund applications within the first month of the portal's launch, noting that processing was temporarily paused to reconcile records before the next round of payments.
He added that students can complete the entire refund process using their mobile phones, monitor their application status, and view their account balances through the online dashboard.
According to the university, the digital platform is designed to make the refund process faster, more transparent, and stress-free, positioning UNICAL among the first higher institutions in Nigeria to fully automate NELFUND refund processing.
