The Ugandan government has suspended all school excursions nationwide following a tragic bus crash that claimed the lives of 20 pupils and one school official in the eastern district of Kapchorwa.
The accident occurred on Thursday evening as pupils from King David Junior School in Ndejje were returning from an educational tour to the popular Sipi Falls tourist site. According to preliminary investigations, the bus reportedly developed a mechanical fault before the driver lost control while descending Chekwatit Hill, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, hit a large rock and overturn.
Several other pupils and school staff sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.
Education Minister John Chrysostom Muyingo announced the temporary suspension of all school trips, saying the measure is necessary to protect students while authorities conduct a full investigation into the cause of the crash.
Local Government Minister Balaam Ateenyi Barugahara confirmed that the school's founder and director, Tadeo Ssekade, was among those who lost their lives.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over road safety in Uganda, where speeding, poor vehicle maintenance and dangerous road conditions continue to contribute to thousands of traffic-related deaths each year. Authorities say the investigation will help determine additional safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
