Two police officers in the United Kingdom are under investigation for alleged gross misconduct after they handcuffed 18-year-old Henry Nowak while he was dying from stab wounds instead of providing immediate medical assistance.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the officers may have breached professional standards by failing to recognise the seriousness of Nowak's injuries, arresting and handcuffing him rather than giving first aid, and allegedly dismissing his repeated pleas that he had been stabbed and could not breathe.
Nowak was fatally stabbed in Southampton in December 2025 by Vickrum Digwa, who falsely told police he had been the victim of a racist attack. Officers initially accepted Digwa's account and treated Nowak as the suspect.
The case sparked widespread public outrage after body-camera footage showed Nowak's desperate calls for help going unanswered. Digwa was later sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.
The IOPC is also examining whether race or religion influenced the officers' actions. At the end of the investigation, authorities will decide whether disciplinary proceedings should be brought against the officers.
Henry Nowak's father urged the public not to use his son's death to fuel division, saying he hopes the tragedy will instead lead to safer streets and improved policing for everyone.
