Two people have died after a fast-moving wildfire destroyed a house near the village of Liti, about 25 kilometres from the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki.
According to Greece's fire brigade, the blaze broke out in bushland on Tuesday afternoon and spread rapidly due to strong winds, engulfing a home in a nearby forested settlement. Firefighters later discovered the body of a man outside the house and another victim inside the burned building.
A woman who suffered burns was rescued from the area and taken to safety. Authorities had earlier ordered residents to evacuate the settlement and move to a nearby playing field as the fire intensified.
Greece and several other Mediterranean countries have experienced increasingly severe wildfires in recent years, with scientists linking the trend to hotter, drier summers driven by climate change.
Emergency crews have since brought the fire under control while investigations into the incident continue.
