United States President Donald Trump arrived in Ankara on Tuesday to participate in the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government Summit, where alliance leaders are expected to focus on defense spending, regional security, and cooperation.
Trump was welcomed at Etimesgut Air Base by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan before heading to the Turkish Presidential Palace for a bilateral meeting. The leaders are expected to discuss NATO priorities, defense cooperation, and other key international issues ahead of the summit's main session on Wednesday.
The visit marks Trump's first official trip to Ankara during his current term. He traveled aboard the newly introduced Air Force One, which recently entered service.
The two-day NATO summit comes as member states continue efforts to strengthen collective defense following last year's commitment to increase security-related spending to five percent of their gross domestic product (GDP). NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said European allies are making significant progress in increasing military budgets and assuming greater responsibility for the alliance's defense.
The summit is also expected to address ongoing global security challenges, including tensions involving Russia and the broader Middle East, as leaders seek to reinforce NATO's unity and long-term strategic goals.
