President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally transmitted a constitutional amendment bill to the House of Representatives seeking to establish state police services across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen the country's security system.
In a letter addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, the President submitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026 for legislative consideration.
Tinubu said the proposed amendment would provide the constitutional framework for states to establish and operate their own police services alongside the Nigeria Police Force. He noted that the bill builds on previous work carried out by the House of Representatives and includes safeguards to ensure the new policing structure is implemented effectively.
According to the President, the legislation is a key component of his administration's strategy to reorganise Nigeria's security architecture and improve public safety amid growing concerns over banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and communal violence.
He urged lawmakers to give the bill speedy consideration and passage.
If approved by the National Assembly and endorsed by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, the amendment will pave the way for the creation of state police services nationwide, a move that has long been advocated by governors, security experts and other stakeholders as a solution to Nigeria's security challenges.
