Syrian authorities have announced the arrest of the group allegedly responsible for the recent bomb attacks in the capital, Damascus, saying preliminary investigations indicate the suspects are affiliated with the armed group ISIL (ISIS).
According to Syria's head of interior security for the Damascus region, Ahmad Dalati, the suspects were detained during coordinated security operations carried out across four neighborhoods in Damascus and nearby rural areas.
The arrests follow two explosions that struck the Syrian capital on July 7, killing one person and injuring 36 others. The attacks occurred while French President Emmanuel Macron was on an official visit to Damascus. A week earlier, another bombing at a café frequented by lawyers left 10 people dead and 21 others wounded.
Interior Minister Anas Khattab confirmed that the security forces had dismantled the suspected terrorist cell and said authorities would disclose the identities of those arrested, their specific roles, and any wider network connections once investigations are completed.
Speaking after the attacks alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, President Macron condemned the bombings and stressed the need to maintain strong security measures while preventing the attacks from undermining Syria's stability.
The latest attacks highlight the ongoing security challenges facing Syria as the country continues its political transition following the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
