The Sudanese army has regained control of the strategic town of Al-Kurmuk in the country's eastern Blue Nile State after intense fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied fighters.
According to military sources, government troops entered the town on Wednesday following a series of operations that pushed RSF fighters out of the area. The recapture comes after the army made recent advances in border areas near Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Al-Kurmuk is considered a key military and logistical hub because it sits near the Ethiopian border and controls important supply routes linking Sudan with both Ethiopia and South Sudan. The RSF had seized the town on March 24.
Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating conflict since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the RSF over plans to integrate the paramilitary group into the national military.
The war has triggered one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, leaving tens of thousands dead and forcing nearly 13 million people to flee their homes.
