Spain’s Ceuta Declares Humanitarian Emergency as Thousands of Migrants Arrive from Morocco

Spanish authorities in the North African enclave of Ceuta have declared a humanitarian emergency after thousands of migrants crossed into the territory from neighbouring Morocco.

According to Spain's national broadcaster, TVE, between 2,000 and 3,000 migrants entered Ceuta on Thursday, July 30. The state news agency, EFE, reported that while many reached the enclave by swimming from the Moroccan coast, others crossed by climbing the high border fence.

Local officials said most of the arrivals entered through the Tarajal breakwater and nearby border barriers, overwhelming reception centres and stretching local resources.

The sudden influx has prompted authorities to activate emergency measures to provide humanitarian assistance and manage the growing number of arrivals.
