The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has threatened to begin a nationwide total and comprehensive strike from Monday, August 10, 2026, if the Federal Government fails to resolve outstanding welfare issues affecting its members.
The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after the association's National Executive Council meeting held in Gombe from July 26 to 31. NARD said it was dissatisfied with the slow implementation of agreements previously reached with the government.
The association is demanding the immediate payment of outstanding salary arrears, promotion arrears, the 25/35 per cent CONMESS salary review arrears, and 19 months of unpaid Professional Allowance. It also called for the inclusion of all eligible resident doctors omitted from the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.
NARD further urged the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to address excessive workloads, long call-duty hours, casualisation of doctors, and the abuse of locum appointments.
The association also raised concerns over the situation at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), accusing the management of intimidating resident doctors and failing to provide call-duty meals.
In addition, NARD condemned the growing attacks and harassment of healthcare workers across the country and called for stronger legal protections, including legislation to criminalise assaults on health workers.
The doctors also appealed to both the Federal and State Governments to increase investment in the health sector by improving healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to quality medical services, strengthening primary healthcare, and recruiting more healthcare personnel.
Despite its concerns, NARD commended the Federal Government for successfully disbursing the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund to eligible beneficiaries. It also praised the governments of Osun, Kaduna, Oyo, Rivers, and Plateau states for improving doctors' welfare, remuneration, healthcare infrastructure, and manpower development.
