South Korea, US, Japan Sign Deal to Expand Small Nuclear Reactor Projects

South Korea, the United States and Japan have signed a new agreement to jointly support the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in third countries, strengthening cooperation on clean energy development.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the NATO summit by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.

According to South Korea's Foreign Ministry, the three allies will work together to provide competitive and reliable energy solutions to help meet growing electricity demand across the Asia-Pacific region and other parts of the world through the use of SMR technology.

Small Modular Reactors are advanced nuclear power systems designed to generate low-carbon electricity with improved safety and flexibility compared to traditional large nuclear plants.

The partnership is expected to enhance energy security, promote clean energy investment, and expand international cooperation in peaceful nuclear technology.
