A South African court has temporarily halted parliamentary impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over allegations linked to the controversial Farmgate scandal.
The Western Cape High Court ruled on Friday that the impeachment committee must suspend its public hearings while Ramaphosa challenges the legality of a 2022 independent panel report, which suggested he may have committed serious misconduct.
The scandal revolves around approximately $580,000 in foreign currency that was reportedly hidden inside a sofa at Ramaphosa's Phala Phala farm in Limpopo Province. The money was allegedly stolen in 2020, sparking widespread criticism and calls for accountability.
Ramaphosa has consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting the money came from the legal sale of buffaloes and rejecting calls for his resignation.
Following the court's decision, presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the president respects the judiciary and remains committed to cooperating with all lawful accountability processes.
Political observers believe Ramaphosa is likely to remain in office, as he continues to enjoy the support of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), which leads South Africa's coalition government. However, the final outcome of the impeachment process will depend on future court decisions and parliamentary action.
