Six Arrested After Mob Kills Two Men Over False Kidnapping Suspicion in Kaduna

Six people have been arrested after two travellers were beaten to death by a mob over a false kidnapping allegation in Kaduna State.

The victims, identified as Muhammadu Sani (45) and Aliyu Mohammed (40), were travelling on a motorcycle from Umar Village in Igabi Local Government Area to Tudun Wada in Zaria on July 1 to visit their sick uncle.

According to the Kaduna State Police Command, the incident occurred in Gidan Kalu Village, Birnin Yero, near Maraban Jos, after residents became suspicious of the pair because they were riding a new motorcycle. Some people allegedly raised a false alarm, shouting "thieves."

Fearing for their safety, the two men abandoned the motorcycle and tried to escape. However, they were chased by an angry mob, severely beaten, and lynched despite repeatedly insisting they were innocent. Police said some members of the crowd even knew the victims but failed to stop the attack.

Police officers from the Birnin Yero Division responded to the scene and arrested six suspects, including Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo. Authorities said the suspects have admitted to taking part in the attack, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other individuals involved.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, condemned the killings, describing the mob action as illegal and unacceptable. He vowed that everyone responsible would be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.

The commissioner urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands, stressing that anyone suspected of committing a crime should be reported to security agencies for proper investigation instead of being subjected to jungle justice.

The incident comes only weeks after another mob killed Ummulkhairi Usman Aliyu in Maraban Jos over a false kidnapping accusation, raising fresh concerns about the growing cases of mob violence in Kaduna State. Police have again appealed to the public to allow law enforcement agencies to handle criminal allegations through due process.
