Nigerian business magnate Aliko Dangote has chosen Lamu, Kenya, as the location for his planned 700,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery, marking a major investment in East Africa's energy sector.
A senior official of Dangote Industries confirmed that the refinery will be constructed in Lamu and is expected to be completed within 30 months.
The project was initially considered for both Kenya and Tanzania. However, after evaluating commercial and technical factors, the company settled on Lamu. Dangote has also encouraged Tanzania to participate in the investment.
The new refinery is designed to replicate the success of the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, which currently processes 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day and is Africa's largest refinery.
The company also aims to expand its Nigerian refinery to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, strengthening its position as a leading player in the global refining industry.
