Russian missile attacks killed at least eight people and injured dozens across Ukraine on Thursday, just a day after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a large-scale Russian assault was imminent.
The strikes hit several regions, including Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and the western city of Lviv. Ukrainian officials said one person was killed in Kyiv, while six others, including two young girls aged five and 12, died after a Russian Iskander-M ballistic missile struck a family home in Kryvyi Rih. Another person was killed in Poltava.
In Lviv, near the Polish border, Russian missiles damaged apartment buildings and injured at least 26 people. Rescue workers searched through the rubble for survivors as emergency services responded to the destruction.
Russia's Defence Ministry said it targeted what it described as military facilities across Ukraine and claimed it also struck cargo ships in Odesa allegedly transporting military equipment.
The attacks prompted Poland to scramble fighter jets after a Russian missile reportedly entered Polish airspace before landing in an uninhabited area. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there was no immediate threat, while NATO confirmed it activated air and ground defence systems to protect allied territory.
President Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for stronger international support, stressing that Ukraine urgently needs more advanced air defence systems and Patriot interceptor missiles to protect civilians from continued Russian missile attacks.
Meanwhile, the European Union announced a new €3.5 billion ($4 billion) financial package for Ukraine to help strengthen its military capabilities, including the purchase of drones, missiles, air defence systems, and fighter jets.
On the Russian side, Ukrainian drone strikes reportedly ignited a warehouse owned by online retailer Wildberries in the city of Penza and targeted facilities in the Krasnodar region, while Ukraine's military claimed it also struck several Russian tankers operating in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
