Nigerian Students Shine at 2026 Singapore Mathematics Olympiad

Nigeria has recorded an outstanding performance at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), with two students finishing among the world's top 10 and the country's team winning multiple gold, silver and bronze medals.

The international competition, held in Singapore from July 17 to 21, brought together 2,285 students from 40 countries and 1,113 schools to compete in advanced mathematics, logical reasoning and problem-solving challenges.

According to the organisers, the achievements demonstrate the growing strength of Nigerian students in global academic competitions and highlight the importance of quality education, mentorship and international exposure.

Leading Nigeria's impressive performance was Agu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, who won two gold medals and one bronze medal across the Mathematics Olympiad Contest, Math Warriors and Math Master Mind events. His exceptional performance earned him eighth place worldwide in the Grade 7 Mathematics Olympiad Contest.

Another outstanding performer was Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, who secured second place globally in the Grade 10 Mathematics Olympiad Contest. Hallel also won a gold medal in the Mathematics Olympiad Contest and a bronze medal in the Math Warriors category.

Nigeria's medal tally was further boosted by Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin of Grundtvig International Secondary School, who claimed gold in the Math Master Mind (Lower Secondary Division).

Additional gold medals were won by Stanley Iduate Samson of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Port Harcourt, in the Math Master Mind (Upper Secondary Division).

Other Nigerian students also earned silver and bronze medals, while several participants received honourable mentions for their impressive performances.

The Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge is an annual global competition that recognises excellence in mathematics, creativity and critical thinking. Nigeria's remarkable performance at the 2026 edition further strengthens the country's reputation as an emerging force in mathematics and STEM education.
