The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a new increase in confirmed Lassa fever cases after a brief decline, with the total number of infections in 2026 rising to 963 and the death toll reaching 229.
According to the agency's latest epidemiological report, confirmed cases dropped from 31 in Week 26 to 14 in Week 27, before increasing to 25 cases in Week 28, indicating that the disease continues to spread across affected states.
The latest cases were recorded in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Kogi, and Cross River states, while Week 27 infections were reported in Ondo, Edo, Benue, Bauchi, and Kogi.
The NCDC said Nigeria's case fatality rate now stands at 23.8%, higher than the 18.7% recorded during the same period in 2025.
The agency also disclosed that 23 states have reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case, with the disease affecting 114 local government areas as of Week 28.
Most confirmed infections remain concentrated in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, and Edo, which account for about 86% of all reported cases. People aged 21 to 30 years remain the most affected age group.
While no healthcare worker was infected in Week 27, one healthcare worker contracted the disease in Week 28.
The NCDC urged Nigerians to support disease surveillance efforts, seek early medical care when symptoms appear, maintain strict infection prevention measures, and promote community awareness to help reduce transmission and prevent more deaths.
