The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the successful airlift of 198 Nigerian troops to The Gambia as part of Nigeria's contribution to the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG).
According to a statement released on Friday, the deployment took place in two flights between May 26 and May 30, 2026, using a NAF C-130H transport aircraft. The operation transported personnel of Nigerian Company 11 (NIGCOY 11) to replace Nigerian Company 10, while also carrying operational equipment and the troops' personal belongings.
The Air Force said the mission demonstrated its ability to rapidly deploy forces beyond Nigeria's borders in support of regional peace, security, and stability.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, said air power remains essential in responding quickly to evolving security challenges across West Africa.
> "Every successful airlift mission reinforces our commitment to protecting Nigeria's interests, supporting regional stability, and maintaining a mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive air power whenever required," Aneke said.
NAF added that the deployment reflects its growing role in multinational peacekeeping operations and highlights Nigeria's continued leadership in promoting security within the ECOWAS region.
Nigeria has remained one of the largest contributors to the ECOWAS peace mission in The Gambia since the force was deployed in 2017 following the country's political crisis after former President Yahya Jammeh refused to concede defeat in the 2016 presidential election. The mission continues to support democratic governance, security, and reforms in The Gambia.
