Moroccan security authorities say they have dismantled a suspected terrorist cell linked to the ISIL affiliate operating in the Sahel, arresting 10 suspects in coordinated raids across several cities.
According to the country's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations, the operation uncovered bladed weapons, military-style clothing, bomb-making manuals, chemicals, digital devices, and a vehicle believed to have been modified for use in a bombing or vehicle-ramming attack.
Investigators also discovered a warehouse containing butane gas cylinders and pressure cookers packed with nails and fitted with electrical wiring, indicating the group was allegedly preparing explosive devices. Officials said the planned attack was at an advanced stage before it was disrupted.
Moroccan authorities noted that the last ISIL-related attack in the country occurred in 2023, when three assailants killed a police officer in Casablanca.
Although Morocco has remained relatively insulated from the growing insecurity in the Sahel, officials say more than 130 Moroccan citizens have reportedly been recruited by the ISIL Sahel Province (ISSP) in recent years.
The arrests come as extremist groups linked to ISIL and al-Qaeda continue to expand their operations across Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and parts of West Africa, raising regional security concerns.
