Man Jailed One Year Over Death of Jewish Protester in California

A California court has sentenced Loay Abdel Fattah Alnaji to one year in Ventura County Jail and two years of felony probation for the 2023 death of Paul Kessler, a Jewish protester, during a confrontation at rival pro-Israel and pro-Palestine demonstrations in Thousand Oaks.

Alnaji pleaded guilty in May to felony involuntary manslaughter and felony battery causing serious bodily injury. Prosecutors said he struck Kessler in the head with a megaphone during an argument, causing the 69-year-old to fall and suffer a fatal head injury after hitting the pavement.

Authorities said Alnaji remained at the scene, called emergency services, and cooperated with investigators before he was arrested days later.

While prosecutors sought a state prison sentence, the court imposed one year in county jail followed by probation, a decision prosecutors opposed.

The case comes amid heightened concerns over rising attacks targeting Jewish, Muslim, and Arab communities in the United States since the outbreak of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023. Recent years have seen several deadly hate-related incidents, prompting renewed calls for efforts to combat extremism and violence.
