Kogi Government Cracks Down on Illegal Highway Tax Collection

The Kogi State Government has warned individuals and groups involved in illegal tax collection on highways to stop immediately or face prosecution.

The Executive Chairman of the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KGIRS), Salihu Enehe, issued the warning during an interactive session with journalists in Lokoja. He said the directive follows the implementation of Nigeria's new tax law, which took effect on January 1, 2026.

According to Enehe, the new law prohibits all unauthorized revenue collection on highways, describing anyone engaging in such activities as enemies of both Kogi State and Nigeria. He stressed that offenders would be treated as economic saboteurs, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He also announced that the sale of revenue emblems and the collection of haulage fees on highways have been abolished. Under the new tax regime, legitimate haulage charges can only be collected at designated loading and off-loading points.

Enehe urged transport operators, business owners, and members of the public to comply with the new regulations and report any cases of illegal tax collection to the appropriate authorities.

He reaffirmed the Kogi State Government's commitment to creating a transparent, efficient, and business-friendly tax system that promotes economic growth while protecting law-abiding citizens.
