The Kaduna State Government has launched a ₦34 billion flood and gully erosion control project while paying about ₦2 billion in compensation to around 1,000 residents whose properties will be affected by the development.
Governor Uba Sani inaugurated the project on Friday in Rigasa, saying the intervention will tackle decades of flooding and erosion affecting communities in Rigasa, Igabi Local Government Area, and Tudun Wada, Kaduna South Local Government Area.
The governor said his administration fulfilled its promise to compensate affected residents before demolishing any property, stressing that no one would be unfairly treated during the implementation of public projects.
Sani described the initiative as the largest flood and erosion control project of its kind in Northern Nigeria, noting that the state has paid more than ₦5 billion in compensation for various infrastructure projects since he assumed office.
According to him, the project will protect lives, homes, public infrastructure and economic assets while restoring environmental stability in the affected communities.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abubakar Buba, said the 17.8-kilometre project will improve environmental conditions, reduce the impact of flooding and erosion, and enhance the socio-economic well-being of residents living along the project corridor.
